The first person behind the mask and alias of NightHawk is a bold and savvy vigilante named Jake Hammel, who was created by Michael Kelly to represent himself in multiple poetic ways. Admiring famous creators such as Stan Lee, Michael designed Jake as an author surrogate to express his spirit, hopes, fears, and unique philosophical views on modern world complications. Resembling Michael's efforts to balance two different lifestyles during early adulthood, Jake's character is split into two existences alternated simply by the time of day and his mask​. Furthermore, reflecting Michael's various life experiences, influences, inspirations, and interests, Jake has a very intricate personality that is altered by certain circumstances throughout the stories. Struggling with his own morals, values, priorities, and choices, Jake ultimately aims to acknowledge his own dark side and harness it when necessary in his campaign against the world's deadliest menaces that he vows to vanquish. Through Jake's perspective, readers and viewers can explore the themes of persistence, corruption, redemption, leadership, and achieving the impossible. Michael has also created other supporting characters to honor his co-creators, friends, family, and the celebrities and fictional icons that he idolizes.
